You guys want to see an insane movie, go try and find Battle Royale. Made in 2000 by Akio Kamatani, Tetsu Kayama, Masumi Okada, and Masao Sato, this movie takes you into the future. It takes place in Japan and everything is going to hell. The moral is low and the youth is becoming wrestless and erily violent. The goverments solution you ask? Send one class of students (like a class of freshman) per year to a deserted island where they are forced to kill each other. They have three days, no rules what so ever, and only one "winner". Friends kill friends and eniemies kill enemies. If you ever see this movie, I guarantee that you will be saying "holy shit..." from the very beggining.
I don't know, it's just an insane japanese flick.
They are making a second one that is coming to the states.
Should be comming out soon.
Kinda like lord of the flies but it's just...better.
Better than those damn new Star Wars movies....almost better than freddy vs jason...
i've not been able to find a real version of this here in the states. i want to see it really badly, as a lot of movies sites talk about it all the time. i'll probably be disappointed b/c of all the hype i've heard, but i want to see it sooo bad. this and 'versus', which also looks crazy.
on a side note, speaking of japanese cinema, did you know there was a movie based on the novel 'parasite eve' (the game was based on the same novel), and if so, have you heard any thoughts on it?
Battle Royale required a little too much sespension of deisbelive to really have the movie work for me. Very well acted though. If you want to see it, get the directors cut DVD that came out a little while ago.
Returner (also from Japan) is much better as a film(though totally different in EVERY way), and better suited to a US auidience as well(think Japan doing a Matrix/ID4/terminator type film).
But, if you're after insane Japanese films, and don't mind crazy scary horror, see Ju-on (the film version, not the video version). It's everything that Ring could have been, but ten times better. The original Japanese director is currently shooting a sequal in Japan staring Sarah Michelle Gellar.

I wanted to see Battle Royale, but I couldn't find the DVD... Returner also. Ju-on? Never heard of it, but if it's better than the Ring or Ringu, then I have to see it. Deffinately the remake, since I have a thing for SMG.
Oh, and Boondock, here's a link to the Parasite Eve movie (DVD), and others that were discussed. In case you want to buy any of em. I think I may!
Ju-on is a Japanese horror film in kinda the same vein as ringu (re-made for the US as "the Ring). The Video version of Ju-on came out before Ringu, and you'll notice a few things that were "borrowed" from Ju-on in Ringu (the directors of both are good friends, and in Japanese culture its actually quite polite to use other people's idears-within reason).
Ju-on was first made as a TV movie (a couple, I think), but it was so immensly popular that it got remade as a theatrical version (the one to see).
The film version has an entirely A-list cast.
On the most basic level, its about a haunted house. Ju-on can be roughly translated as "the Grudge", as in a dead person who is pissed off and is going to kill anyone who gets in its space.
The Director of Ju-on is now making a film for the US, though its not a re-make, its a sequel, so anyone who has seen the Japanese version will get a lot more out of it when they see "the Grudge" (US title).

I watched it and it was actually pretty entertaining. It's great how all the kids are assigned with random weapons at the beggining and some of the are screwed so bad. I mean really now, one of them got a pot lid, a pot lid!
