Chinatown Wars PSP struggles to move 12k opening week. Ouch.
I was just watching tv and saw an ad for Chinatown Wars PSP and though hm I wonder if sales are in yet this will make for an interesting comparison. Well VGchartz had week one sales, and if they are to be believed, not looking so good. 12,003 units week 1. Just over a 1/5th of the copies the ds version moved it's opening week 6 months ago. So was it just the top down perspective that made the mass market find it less appealing than say Liberty City Stories or GTAIII? Shame, because I own it and its a damn solid little portable effort. Interesting to see it fall so flat on a sony platform though.
Is this a port of the DS game? Either way, if the PSP version underwhelms, maybe developers will look at that and take back some of their mild anti-DS comments.

Nintendo DS Friend Codes -
well if it sells less than the DS one overall. then it will help rockstar understand what they did wrong with the game rather than the audience they were aiming for (even though the game wasnt bad)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Perhaps its just because the GTA buying public is spoiled after the riches of GTA4 and doesn't want to go back to the top down gameplay.
We can only hope that Rockstar eats crow on it as the game really isn't that good at all. I wish IGN and the rest would fucking grow up already and act like adults when reviewing huge 'series' type titles. Just because it says GTA on the box doesn't demand that it requires giving it a goddamn 9 and above, seriously. The game when I had it was a bore, the plot while faking new was the same old shit yet again, and the missions were the same too. The only new idea was a fumbled drug peddler bit, and the one good bit about wasting cop cars in a chase to lower the wanted level.
I'm happy it's selling like crap, goes to show they need to fess up and man up and admit they were buck passing pissing on the DS as why it didn't move. This if anything proves it's the game itself and their handling of it. Perhaps if Rockstar would look at what Volition did with Saints Row 2, and other so-called GTA ripoffs that honestly are a lot more engaging and started picking off those ideas and losing much of their tired repeat crap they'd be better off for it.
Didn't the first two GTA games on psp sell a ton? Seems like psp owners are not interested in a port then. I've heard it is fantastic, so I don't really understand why.

Yes but those looked and played exactly like the 3D GTAs on consoles. This game is reminiscent of the original two GTA games, which only hardcores of the series would want.

I think you're onto something. Maybe people see the screens and go "Ewww, 2d??!?"
Well the level of quality is still there in the series, but I haven't really enjoyed a GTA game since San Andreas. Aside from a few standout moments, GTA4 was a big let down to me. Saints Row 2 provided infinitely more fun and a variety of things to do.
GTA: CW being a late port certainly has some bearing on the games sales, but 12k is bomb. I mean GTA3 got a extremely late port to Xbox and it sold far less than the PS2 version but better than this.
Epic I agree by far Saints Row2 was far better of a game in any way than GTA4 as that was just very poorly done, super cheap (you hit someone, 10cops on you, they hit you...it's alright), and took what felt like countless hours to get a weapon just to have it taken away and then again. GTA has lost it's fun unless you're so just deep into exactly the same crap in every game with a modified coat of paint over it, it's boring as hell. The game is just another GTA with the same basic story, same basic mechanics, and barely anything new really added of value (wasting cop cars to shake stars is cool.)
I think it's not so much this started on DS as they did really well moving it over and upgrading the DS like stuff to it (a/v package) but it's still another tired GTA game with no inspriation. I think it has just as much to do with that than not being a PS2 mini game too. As darc said, you can't account 12k sales to being a game starting on DS, it just is what it is...same ol shit, and people are wising up to it.
