PlayTV

What do people think of PlayTV, the TV tuner and PVR solution for PS3? It's coming to Australia next month for the outrageous price of AUD 170, but with the booming Aussie dollar I reckon I can import it from the UK (where it's already out) for about AUD 110-120. We have a dinky little DVD recorder at home that I convinced mum to buy out of some silly impulse aeons ago, but we never got the recording to work for some reason.

I'm a big fan of streaming my stuff online, but the Aussie VOD sector is still fairly immature, thanks to a generally shitty level of flash interfaces, limited show selection and the fact that most ISPs still meter most channels' VOD interfaces (so you pay for the data from them). With PlayTV, I can leave my PS3 on standby and it can switch on to record a programmed show, than switch off later. If I chucked in a nice big HDD for my PS3, I'm thinking it might be a tempting proposition next time I fall into some money.

Anyone else had a play about with PlayTV?

I don't know since it is not out here. Would probably be cheaper just to put a tuner in a pc and use it as a DVR. I currently use my PS3 as a media player in my living room streaming all my content from my room. I use a free java based server software and have not had any issues with playing anything.

Maybe you can find a review for playtv and share the details.

Well, I have DLNA streaming set up from my laptop, but I don't really care to have it or a server on all the time anyway. I usually leave all of my media on a USB drive and play it on the PS3 from there, and that's enough for me. But given I have a PS3 remote and my mum and sister are better at playing content on there than, say, a computer, it'd make sense for me to do things that way.
