The recently announced Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 port of Wii game No More Heroes is now on the hunt for a new North American publisher. Ubisoft says it's passing.

In a statement to G4, the French publisher said that unlike the original Wii game and its sequel No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle, No More Heroes: Heroes Paradise shan't carry the Ubisoft logo on these shores. No reason given, apparently, but here's to hoping Grasshopper Manufacture can find a friend for those of use interested in experiencing "Very Sweet Mode" stateside.

Whatever the reasoning was for Ubisoft declining, it's not a good start for this game to reach a broader audience.

I originally intended to respond in that thread, but rather than derail the topic, I figured I would just start a new thread for people to talk about everything and anything fighting-game related.

So here's my thoughts on the fighting games of this generation. I highlighted some of the stuff I thought would raise blood-pressures high enough to incite responses :P :

Both Soul Calibur 4 and Dead or Alive 4 were great fighting games. Neither of them could quite match the balance or nuance of VF5 (still the best fighting game ever made), or offer the immediate accessibility or hidden depth of Street Fighter 4 (second best fighter this generation), but they are still top tier fighters.

Soul Calibur 4 is the best SC title since the original. SC2 is heavily overrated because it was basically the only big fighting game of the last generation (shame on all you people who didnt buy VF4 on the PS2) and fanboys loved playing as Link. Soul Calibur 3 was more of a best-of title, crammed full of characters from both games and a ton of new characters with little consideration for balance. SC3 was basically the MvC of the SC franchise. SC4 has near-perfect balance save for the stupid addition of Star Wars characters, the fighting mechanics were refined to a science.

Dead or Alive 4 was only the second DOA title to be worth a damn. DOA through DOA3 saw marginal improvements (aside from presentation, which saw huge gains) but the major problem with the series remained. For all the cool features like multi-tiered environments, the balance was shoddy and the fighting mechanics were shallow. The counters were too easy to pull off and did too much damage. DOA2: Ultimate on Xbox, in addition to adding online play, tightened up the balance a little bit and decreased the damage of the counters, but it wasnt until DOA4 reduced the time you had to hit the counter-button that everything clicked and the fighting suddenly became outrageously fun. Yes, juggling was still the predominant strategy for EVERY character and some characters were FAR better than others (cough*Ninjas*cough), but it was still a riot.

So, in closing:

Virtua Fighter 5 > Street Fighter 4 = BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger> Soul Calibur 4 = Dead or Alive 4 > Tekken 6 > KOF XII

For games that are of equal objective quality, like SF4 and Blazblue, it comes down to your subjective opinion of the gameplay mechanics. I actually had more fun with SC4 and DOA4 than I did BlazBlue, but BlazBlue is admittedly deeper and more nuanced than both.

Pick your selling point for the next Final Fantasy on Wii: (Primarily) single-player with a deep story? Sort of is 75% mini-games? Can lift cow and use udders over character's head to shoot enemies? The last notable game of 2009?

I was introduced to Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers last week, discovering quickly that this was not the kind of Crystal Chronicles game I had expected. It is, you see, a single-player game, the first in a splinter line of Final Fantasy games made for Wii platforms and previously designed for four players.

The Crystal Bearers is different, set 1000 years after Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and putting the player in control of a single hero, a mercenary named Layle. The series' dwarf race, the Lilty Tribe, have risen to power. The mechanical race, the Yuke, have seemingly been wiped out.

I was told by a Square-Enix representative that this game would feel like a "true Final Fantasy" for the Wii. It will have a deep storyline. But it also has real-time combat and was described to me as 75% mini-games.

What I saw and played clarified things. I was shown Layle running through a farm, getting pulled into a challenge to pluck all of the vegetables from a field before a clock ran out. A scarecrow was the opponent, shooting at Layle to try to mess him up. So don't think of "mini-games" in terms of a Mario Party, I realized. Think of them is mid-game challenges.

Next, I was shown some combat. Layle ventured to a dusty desert area and enemies attacked. The game is played with a Wii Remote and Nunchuk. The control stick moves the character. The Remote's pointer is used for telekinesis, to pick up objects and enemies, then toss them. The d-pad on the Remote is used to swivel the camera, the only element of the controls I found hard to handle in the few minutes I played the game.

I was told that conversations with non-player-characters will be less than typical for an FF game. Instead, the interactions the player tries to get are "reactions." You get these from enemies by encountering them. For example, out in that desert area, Layle fought some dog enemies. Once he had a Reaction associated with them, he could get them to stop fighting, run over and, uh, urinate on him. Other Reactions are equally comical, sending enemies into a daze because they've had their heads knocked off, for example. It's all cartoony, done for laughs.

Also, somehow, some way, you can take a cow, hold it over Layle's head, and shoot enemies with its udders.

I'm a sucker for the absurd in my games, so, as little as I saw of the Crystal Bearers, I was encouraged. It's hard to see it as being a "true" Final Fantasy game, but only a longer play session that presents more of the story can verify that claim.

I was told that Crystal Bearers does support a co-op mode that allows a second player to use the Remote as an assist, similar to Co-Star mode in Super Mario Galaxy.

The game plays swiftly, action-first. It is colorful and has fun visuals, as you can see in these shots. Crystal Bearers may be off some people's radar, but it will indeed be out this year in North America, the day after Christmas, for the Wii.

Definitely sounds better than the original CC, which to me was a project that didn't live up to it's potential.

Pretty cool in concept. Skip the computer, head straight to the internet. Wonder how this will appeal to those of us that use our computer for other things, things that require a proper OS.

Simple questions: what does this do to printing? Software like PhotoShop, HTML Editors, Office (though you could argue this is already online with Google Docs). How about MP3 player synching, photo sharing, things that are outside of the internet. Surely, Google will build with this in mind.

The video goes into the computer being nothing but browser... I find that hard to believe. Do you market it to people that ONLY use the internet? Maybe it's just browser first, everything else comes second.

Jacked this from NWR:

First announced for an unnamed platform in last week's issue of Famitsu, Square Enix has released details on the newest entry of Taito's Lufia series. (Square Enix acquired Taito in 2005.) Confirmed as a DS title, Estpolis: The Land Cursed by the Gods (Estpolis is the Japanese title of the franchise known as Lufia in North America), is scheduled for a February 25 Japanese release at a price of 5,980¥.

The Land Cursed by the Gods stars the monster hunter Maxim. The story covers the quest he embarks on with his friends to unravel the mystery of the Wave Device. The device is capable of granting its user god-like power.

Maxim was also the star of Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals. The story of the SNES classic focuses on Maxim's quest to confront a race of magical demigods, the Sinistrals. Square Enix calls the DS title a "rebirth" of the 1996 title. It is unclear how the two titles' stories are related beyond the shared cast.

Appropriately for a "rebirth," Neverland Company, the original creators of the series, are developing the new title. Among those listed as involved with the new project are many of the developers of the SNES classic Lufia & The Fortress of Doom and the prequel Lufia II.

There are significant gameplay differences between this game and previous entries in the series. The game will feature the same style of puzzle-heavy dungeons as Lufia II. Unlike Lufia II, the new title has a more action-oriented battle system. The player will control Maxim directly, and switch between characters by tapping their portraits.

Happy to see this, finally some more DS games I'd be willing to play if it gets localized and I see no reason why it wouldn't.
