** Obvious Spoilers So Get Out **
I just finished with 99% scans (Damned Ing Webtrap, where the hell was that?) and 93% items (Missiles, I assume).
The game is definitely one of the best I've played. I do feel like this game is not what we're used to see in the Metroid universe, but then again, it never intended to be. It's a different planet with different enemies and allies.
So what do I think? First of all, the world is pretty believable. It didn't rely on cliché levels (Fire/Ice/Plant worlds) like Prime, and instead tried to make a cohesive world. It worked, in my opinion. Sanctuary Fortress is amazing, and Torvus Bog was pretty impressive as well. Many think that the Temple Grounds is an excellent level as well, and yeah, I'd have to agree with that too, for instance, the fact that you could see the big tree (is that what it is?) in the middle that led up to the Luminoth Temple from any part of the Grounds was a nice touch.
Agon Wastes was a bit underwhelming, in my opinion, not because of the level design (it was top notch) but because you didn't really spend a lot of time on it (or maybe I felt like I spent more time in the other levels). I do think that the sequences that presented the Space Pirates were awesome (as well as the Space pirate logs), But that's actually another complain of mine... they ended the Space Pirates' involvement with the game too early, and didn't even explain it. They should've showed logs that said something like: "We give up, we're going to return to our base" or something, but instead we don't know what happened to the Space Pirates.
I wish I would've seen more logs about the Metroids (We hardly see Metroids) and explain how they got there (I think they did, I'm not sure) and what the purpose of breeding them was. Again, we don't see that. (to be fair, we do see some funny lines like: "Do not feed the Metroids" and "The Metroids are not Pets")
It was very fun at first when you didn't know who the real bad guys were. Were they the Space Pirates? Dark Samus? the Ing? And even though in the end you eventually find out about all of this -- again -- you never know what happens to the Space Pirates. Do they die in the destruction of Dark Aether? Did they leave before it happens? Did they ever try to ally with Dark Samus? (I think they do, but that didn't go very well, I assume, because before you get the Echo Visor you see them getting their arses kicked by her/it). Did they get what they were looking for? (What was it, by the way? More Phazon?). It definitely let me wondering about that.
But other than that, the story is great, and the logs are scripted beautifully. Seriously, if you think Metroid doesn't have a story, you are pretty deluded. The script is very well done.
And overall, the game is yet another impressive showing of Retro's artistic magic/muscle and GameCube's potential.
I'd say get it. NOW.
