View Full Version : How do you say Sega?
There's two types of names people call Sega. One is Say-ga the other is See-ga. How do you say it? I say it the Say-ga way :p

Seh-guh, like Nathan. I like Sega a lot. They brought me PSO and that is a reason to love them. So what if the only thing theyve done right was PSO and SoA:L. At least those games are teh roxorz

It's supposed to be "Say-ga" but I say "Seh-ga" like most of us do.

Well, here's the (short) story around the pronunciation:
As most of you know, Sega stands for Service Games (a company that primarily made arcade cabinets, the most popular early ones being games like Hang On! and Space Harrier) Now, if you pulled together Service Games, you'd get something like Suh-Gey. However, the pronunciations of vowels in Japan are as follows:
a- as in car
i- like "ee"
u- like "oo"
e- as in hey
o- "O"
So, they took the English spelling of Service Games and pronounced it in Japanese dialect, making "Se" sound like "say" and "Ga" aound like "guh". So it officially is pronounced like "say-guh" (think the old genesis/megadrive games: "Saee-gaaa")
haha, now you guys gone and made me wanna play sonic. *throws Mega Collection in the 'cube*

My friend does, and so does my brother. I was wondering what way you guys say it because I wanted to know which was the most popular way of saying it.

I say Seega now, although when I lived in England I used to say Sayga (it's just a different accent, really). I don't know anyone who says SEGA with a short 'e' (if you were using the Japanese syllables, you would most definitely not say "say-guh"; it'd be "se-ga")

no, no, "say-guh" is just an english approximation of the japanese pronunciation of the word. Trust me :D
