Recognition of Mature Gamers Preferences

To: Developers and Publishers Intending to Produce Software for the Nintendo DS

There is an unfair branding of Nintendo gaming systems as being only suited to “younger” players, whilst this may have been true at one time, the simple fact is that those gamers are growing up and are looking for more varied gamestyles. No-one begrudges Nintendo’s efforts at producing in-house software that, at worst, promotes the image of a company that is family friendly; however, the position that third parties adopt, that this excuses them of producing more mature software, must stop. They accuse Nintendo of doing nothing to help rid itself of its “childish” image, but then only release software that tries to exploit that image, this is simple hypocrisy.

Nintendo has recently revealed its next handheld system to the world, a system that has caused a great deal of interest in the press and gamers alike, it should lead to a great deal of innovation from developers. Instead, there are already hints that thinking is becoming limited, even such innovators as Hideo Kojima are narrowing their options before the system has already reached the market:

Have you thought about doing a Metal Gear Solid game for DS?

Kojima: It would be nice to have a Metal Gear game for DS, but the thing is I personally think that the audience for DS will be like that of GBA - it'll be a much younger audience. And this Metal Gear's not really suitable for them.

We are Mature Gamers. We are simply seeking a less blinkered attitude from the developers and publishers who are planning to work on the Nintendo DS. Do not brand the system as “childish”, or “kiddie”, before you have even seen the market that will adopt it. We are excited about this system and we want games that challenge us, not demean us; we want games that talk to us, not talk down to us; we want games that exploit the systems strengths, not ones that leave us feeling it is wasted. In short, you have the chance to create the market that you sell to, please, do not throw it away.

To those signing this petition, please contact as many publishers as possible, passing on the URL for this petition. Those officially announced by Nintendo already are:

THQ, Electronic Arts, Activision, Atari, Ubisoft, Majesco, Capcom, Sega, Konami, Hudson Soft, Namco, Bandai, Koei and Square Enix.

There are plenty more out there, let them know how you feel.

(The petition author would like to mention, at this point, that he is 34 years old and has been playing videogames since the mid-1970's. He is currently more excited about the Nintendo DS than anything else, in the videogame industry, for many years. Please, do not disappoint him.)

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

I think its silly. Nintendo makes games for everyone, and that's good. Mature games are the only fun ones people, and just because you've been playing them all your life doesnt mean other people have too.

I agree wholly. I'm not signing that ****. Plus, I'd play zelda or mario over GTA or Resident Evil anyday, and I'm 16.

I agree with you Redwall but Nintendo needs to be recognized by outsiders not as a kiddy company. I'd take any Nintendo game over GTA or Halo, but other people, casual gamers wont.

Face it, Nintendo is stuck with the kiddie image. They could release nothing but GTA clones or difficult mature games, and they'd still be considered kiddie

Hmm.. the way I look at it.. I think more Nintendo fans switch over to XBOX/PS2 than PS2/XBOX fans switch over to Nintendo on a daily basis. The casual gamer doesn't understand or probably isn't interested in what Nintendo offers.

At first impressions, Nintendo to a casual gamer is a "childish" image. Games like Mario, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, and Zelda: WW is perceived to the mainstream to be a collection of "kiddie stuff". Like Shawn mentioned, even with games that are superior in content and graphics like Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil series, F-Zero GX, Metal Gear Solid: TS, etc., no one cares.. and yeah, most of the games I just listed didn't sell that well. SK and 3rd parties had a fairly good reason to lower/drop support.

We, the Nintendo fans, are a true bit*h. We, the ones who buy the games that score a 8.5 or higher. We, the hardcore gamers, who want mature games but still want Mario games. We, the ones who are so damn anticipated by RE4 but probably wouldn't of been as interested if it was on PS2/XBOX. We, who want, want, and fu**ing want.. In my opinion, we hardcore gamers are so damn biased and picky. And casual gamers are so damn blind and ignorant.

I've always loved Nintendo and love pretty much all Nintendo games. I would never want them to change their philosophy in terms of making games. But in terms of marketing, I would like them to open up and expand a bit to the lacking teen-adult areas.

I've been finding a certain strange response to this petition, in a lot of places. The main one seems to be that people think I'm attacking Nintendo, far from it, this petition is aimed at the Development Community at large. I have got nothing against Nintendo, they produce some of the best games out there, but some developers see the "kiddie" image as being an excuse not to put any effort in.

The other response seems to be that I'm looking for blood, gore, offensive language and nudity. Well, if they wish to confuse "Adult Games" with Mature ones, then that's their problem. Mature games are about presenting a challenge to those who are up to it, those who are willing to put some effort into their game rather than spend a few seconds over a bit of "fluff", those who seek long-term goals.

That doesn't mean you can't have your mindless shoot-em-up, just offer people the choice.

Didn't Sign it.

Don't Care.

Only lame teenagers and junior high kids are obsessed with being "mature" and having so-called "mature" games.

GTA may have adult content, but it's anything but mature.

It's more like two 10 year old boys giggling a fart joke.

Lame.

I hate to burst your bubble, but I've been surfing the net and playing my cards in the gaming website community for six or more years. I have yet to see an online petition make so much as a ripple in the industry waters.

Keep the passion alive though I guess. The voice must reach someone at some point ;)

Nintendo makes games for everyone btw.
