What an awful way to ring in 2009. It turns out that Viacom claims it has been trying to negotiate a "fair" renewal of its prized cable channels for months and months, but reputedly Time Warner Cable has been unresponsive and "unreasonable" so talks have stalled. The nation's 2nd largest cable system operator, in turn, claims Viacom is asking for "exorbitant" increases in carriage fees which would have to be passed along to the customer. So now this fight between the two Big Media giants will hurt cable viewers. At 12:01 AM on January 1st, just after the ball drops in Time Square, Time Warner Cable's 13.3 million subscribers will lose 19 Viacom channels -- Comedy Central; CMT: Pure Country; Logo; Palladia; MTV; MTV 2; MTV Hits; MTV Jams; MTV Tr3s; Nickelodeon; Noggin; Nick 2; Nicktoons; Spike; The N; TV Land; Vh1; Vh1 Classic; Vh1 Soul.
Damn. I'm glad I don't use Time Warner for my cable.

Wow, that is going to suck for people with Time Warner based Cable. I never thought I'd be happy to have Comcast....its Craptastic...erm Comcastic after all.
Edit: Post number 5000, wow....I spend too much time here. Wait..it took me over 4 years to get this many posts so I guess I don't feel to bad.

Damn, sometimes I'm glad I've just got an antenna.
Sucks about losing Comedy Central and Spike (or as I like to call it, the CSI channel).

The cost of cable tv and **** like this is what lead me to using torrents, streaming and the internet in general.
I d/l all of the shows I'm in to. I stream hockey games through the NHL Gamecenter. Don't fret, friend, drop your cable subscription and go the way of the internet. Guarantee in about 5 or 10 years almost all entertainment will be online anyways.
I haven't watched TV at home in months...

Hey Joey, a lot of the networks let you watch their shows on their websites. I know I do that sometimes.

Yes sir. I recommend Hulu and Fancast beyond that. They show tons of stuff and it's completely free and legal.
Truth be told, I watched all of Doogie Howser, MD on Hulu about two or three months ago. What a show...

I only have cable to watch Lakers games. Every other show is online.

Hey kids time to start using HULU. ;) (hulu.com)
Many networks put up both clips and their latest tv shows on here, some movies as well exist. Some networks put up entire seasons (Simpsons is one doing that from Fox.) Brother showed me this and he uses it and it's really a fantastic service. There's also a Comedy Central one just for Southpark (I think it's southparkcentral.com or something) where you can see every season, every episode...free.
I pity anyone using that network, but if they're not being liars Viacom can go to hell if they're trying to hose consumers with a huge hike. It wouldn't surprise me with the economy if they're trying to fix a bottom line by screwing carriers. I think my parents have these TW guys.

When I was in the States that was all I did. Never even bothered to tune my telly in; I just used it for the Wii.

I didn't have any of these channels in the first place, so I don't care much. If this had happened about half a year ago, then I'd have been pissed. We'd been getting free cable for about two and a half years 'cause no one disconnected us after my dad canceled our service, but someone finally put two and two together and cut us off. Either way, I would lose those channels, so I guess it's best that I didn't develop more of an attachment to 'em (though I did love the hell out of Comedy Central and the CSI channel).

I use Hulu more than my television so this won't really affect me, even though I do have Time Warner.

cool tip bro
I will very, very rarely watch something that isn't in high definition (which I obtain through legal means via the internet), and I never watch anything on television anyway. Out of curiosity though, is this just the supposed to be in the U.S. then or does it affect Canada?
