View Full Version : Does eye color affect perception of brightness?

I've been driving a lot more at night recently (well, at least I was until I had my wisdom teeth pulled), and cars driving toward me obviously have their headlights on. It seemed like they were driving around with their brights turned on, which really pissed me off. I mentioned this to my mom, and she told me that since I have blue eyes, lights seem brighter than they would if I had brown eyes or some other color. I've never heard of this before. Is there any evidence to back this up?

I have to admit, my eyes are blue and I'm often blinded by light that others aren't.

Make of that what you will.

Some reports suggest that eye colour may have some effect on vision but nothing has been scienctifically proven...yet.

However, if you are an Albino, you are more likely to encounter eye problems like light sensitivity and lack of visul acuity.

People with light eyes have fewer pigments to protect them form the sun so they are more likely to have sun damage. Cataracts can develop as a result of sun damage and they can be a serious visual impairment.

Yeah, I think that plays some part in it. I can't help but wonder if eye color is a part of it, though, now that it has been brought to my attention.

Blokey, it still disturbs me how much we're alike, both mentally and physically.:P

you know.. i have a very weird eye disorder.. it's called heterochromia. i have one green eye and one brown eye.. well.. from further research.. i have basically central heterochromia.. my eyes are green towards the outside.. but i have brown rings near the pupil. it doesn't effect my vision though as i have 20 / 10 in my right eye and 20 / 05 in my left eye.. so we're all good. looks cool though.. bad thing though you can really only notice it if you look at them in the light.. if not they just look brown really.

I've got blue eyes as well and some car lights seem brighter than they should be. However I've never really been in a car with someone else and asked em how bright they are to them.

I asked my mom, but then she's got blue eyes, too. Everyone in my family does. Haven't asked a friend though, either.

Eye color doesn't have any effect on the vision and this is scientifically proven....u can consult this with your doctor too...

My eyes are brown and I have found that my eyes are a bit more sensitive towards lights than some of my friends with a similar colour.

Eye color means nothing. If something is bothering you, you might need glasses. Go to the eye doctor.

Right before I turned 20, lights at night seemed brighter then they should be. Went to the doctor, found out I needed glasses.

The minute I put those glasses on, it felt like I was watching HD television.

So, wait, glasses will make the lights dimmer? That seems kinda backwards.

^ I'm no expert, but for me, lights seemed brighter and all over the place without them. Obviously with glasses they do some brighter because of the reflections (even with that anti-glare crap), but not as hardcore as I saw without them.

Either way, if you feel something is wrong go check it out. Normally your supposed to get your eyes checked once a year. Takes less then 15 minutes.

Well, it's been a little while since I've had 'em checked, but this only happens with headlights at night, nothing else, so I think I'm good.

Yes, blue eyes are the most sensitive to the brightness and brown - the less
