All the Candidates’ Cars
By Keith Naughton and Hilary Shenfeld | NEWSWEEK

When you have seven homes, that's a lot of garages to fill. After the fuss over the number of residences owned by the two presidential nominees, NEWSWEEK looked into the candidates' cars. And based on public vehicle-registration records, here's the score. John and Cindy McCain: 13. Barack and Michelle Obama: one.

One vehicle in the McCain fleet has caused a small flap. United Auto Workers president Ron Gettelfinger, an Obama backer, accused McCain this month of "flip-flopping" on who bought daughter Meghan's foreign-made Toyota Prius. McCain said last year that he bought it, but then told a Detroit TV station on Sept. 7 that Meghan "bought it, I believe, herself." (The McCain campaign did not respond to multiple requests for comment.)

Obama's lone vehicle also is a green machine, a 2008 Ford Escape hybrid. He bought it last year to replace the family's Chrysler 300C, a Hemi-powered sedan. Obama ditched the 300C, once 50 Cent's preferred ride, after taking heat for driving a guzzler while haranguing Detroit about building more fuel-efficient cars.

McCain's personal ride, a 2004 Cadillac CTS, is no gas sipper, but it should make Detroit happy because it's made by General Motors. "I've bought American literally all my life and I'm proud," McCain said in the interview with Detroit's WXYZ-TV. But the rest of his fleet is not all-American. There's a 2005 Volkswagen convertible in the garage along with a 2001 Honda sedan. Otherwise, there's a 2007 half-ton Ford pickup truck, which might come in handy on the Sedona ranch; a vintage 1960 Willys Jeep; a 2008 Jeep Wrangler; a 2000 Lincoln; and a 2001 GMC SUV. The McCains also own three 2000 NEV Gem electric vehicles, which are bubble-shaped cars popular in retirement communities.

Only the Cadillac is registered in the candidate's name. Cindy McCain's name is on 11 vehicles, though not the one she actually drives. That car, a Lexus, is registered to her family's beer-distributor business and is outfitted with personalized plates that read MS BUD.

I think the most shocking thing for me are Cindy's cars themselves. For someone who was rocking a $300k outfit to the RNC, I'm shocked she has cars more than 1 or 2 years old. Ew.

And I'll add that the 300C is a POS car that had brilliant marketing and bold design (for an american car) that quickly became overpriced after Chrysler saw how popular it was.

I drive a lot of cars in my line of work and the 300C, Charger and Magnum have some of the poorest interiors for cars priced in their range. Then their geared to not be potent until you crack 60 MPH or 6000 RPM, and have no low end grunt what so ever (base models, the even higher priced SRT8s and HEMI's may be different in that department).

The Magnum is the exception of the 3, that has to be one of the oddest looking but funnest cars I've ever driven. Turn off the traction control and the base model has balls combined with a more responsive throttle than it's siblings. They all corner like bricks though.

Calibur, Avenger and Nitro are all cash-in vehicles of the older siblings that suck too. That is all.

Yeah Deathstar, the 300 is a two ton car. If you don't have the Hemi its a slug. The 2.7 V6 has only 190hp and the 250hp for the 3.5 Magnum V6 is merely adequate for a car with such gerth. Now if you have the 5.7 (345hp) or 6.1 Liter (425hp) Hemi's, hold on for dear life :D

@MAX

Come on MAX, we all know the guy with one house and one car is the elitist. Never mind that he and his wife came from a poor backgrounds. Yet both of them managed to get into prestigious schools. I mean it would be nice to have President that went to an Ivy league school because they were smart enough to get in and not because their dad pulled some strings.

But neither candidate owns a hunt'n truck, so they're both elitist.

It's funny how a presidents rise to an Ivy league school has come into question until this year. When many ivy leaguers are grandfathered in and go on to run for office or hold nice jobs.

Backon topic: I can seen the potential in the Magnum even in the base model, a HEMI in that thing HAS to be sick.

Well that's more like it! There's nothing like shooting rabbits from the backseat of a half-tonne pickup. I know who I'd vote for.

The Magnum was canceled. :mad: Which sucks, because I liked it far more than the 300 or the Charger. I don't have kids but its the perfect vehicle for guy that wants enough space to carry around the family and the performance of a sports car. I know it was niche vehicle, but it shares a platform with the 300, Charger, and Challenger its not like it was cost prohibitive to keep it around. :(

Back on topic: I wonder if our Government is going to capitulate to Toyota. I know Toyota doesn't want the Chevrolet Volt to get a tax credit, probably because GM is actually beating them to the punch on Plug-In Hybrid technology. They had no problem reaping the benefits of tax credits on the Prius for years though. It will interesting to McCain and Obama's stance on that issue.

And Darc, if Chrysler would stop advertising cars like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zc304YToTc and selling cars like the one I described I may not be as disappointed when I get behind the wheels of them.

The new Impala (base model) has more guts from a cold start than any of the Dogdes/Chryslers.

I hear the Challenger suffers from the same Jekyl and Hyde marketing personality too.

The Magnum was canceled.

Same thing happened to the Mercury Marauder. Now that was a badass car.

Sorry for the double post, supermods or whomever needs to merge I don't have the powers!

The problem with the Challenger is that is weighs just as much as the Charger. They didn't cut any weight from the car. The Challenger is only 20lbs lighter than the Charger. Going from four doors to two usually saves you around 100lbs alone. The new Camaro is too heavy in my view as well but it's still 140lbs lighter than the G8. Of course with 300hp DI V6 and a 422hp V8 its still fast as hell and like the G8 it handles well because of the Zeta platform. I really wish they'd find a way to shave 250lbs of the Zeta platform. The only problem with it is weight.

@MAX

Sorry for getting off topic here. I like cars ;)

So McCain has 1 car and his wife has too many. Hell of a list for sure. You know what I'd really love to read semi-related to this. The McCains pre-nup. All I've been able to collect is that anything she came into it with (houses, cars, other property, etc) all return to her, and anything since then bought off a penny from her beer distro and other investments she keeps entirely too. She ever dumps his ass that's going to be one hell of a shell shock now wouldn't it?

It's really a minor issue, but it's hilarious that McSame would brag about buying all American yet own 2 foreign made cars.

Yup we agree a minor issue. I just find it funny that the Obamessiah had one of those awful 300s, then goes for the Escape hybrid which still has crap gas mileage, but it's got the green hybrid leaf on it, so that's cool. ;)

I'm up for some Chevy Volt when that's released. 40mi on NO gas, after that the little engine starts just to recharge the cells. Car picks up and moves like a gas engine so you're not a slow accelerating trunk smashing target.

Okay Jeff that's BS. Owners have no trouble meeting or exceeding EPA ratings of 34city/30hwy for the FWD or 29city/27hwy for the AWD models. If you are gonna pull stuff out of your ass please don't it on cars. It's the one thing I'm more into than video games. Those mileage numbers rival compact to mid size cars BTW.

Seems like a moot point to me. Both are wealthy, both think they are fit to govern over the whole nation; these men are not by any stretch of the imagination humble. McCain is part of prestigious naval lineage and married to a very rich lady and Obama is and wealthy ivy-leaguer. The salient point is that both are part of the 'upper echelon' of society.

Unfortunately, McCain made a damn issue out of it and now we're stuck counting chickens as if one owning a few dozen less than the other makes him more down-to-earth when the average Joe has like, maybe three chickens total.

^Why McCain made an issue of it is puzzling to me. I mean does he really want people to know why he is affluent. Its only a matter of time before someone brings up what he did to the wife that waited for him faithfully while he was in a POW camp.

I don't know if his ex-wife is just really passive, given great compensation, or both, but every response of hers I've managed to find isn't anything damning (at least not to folks who still need to be convinced.)

Uhh max? What? I'm guessing you're trying to make some crack that the obamessiah thing is a conspiracy theory or whatever. I just made that one up the other day when I just see so many people follow him, pray for him to win, pray he will do all he says, and everything will just seemingly be made right by the waving of his hands and I find it silly. No one president can just throw the healing power of an 'all mighty' bandaid on it and everything is cool, but that's how a good deal of his supporters come off, yet few in comparison can say why he's so special and far less know how he intends to do his plans. It's like a blind faith issue, and I have issues with blind faith as that gets into the christian (or other religion) nut realm.
