View Full Version : Opinions on beer

Think of this as the sister thread to "opinions on drugs". I was getting pissed off that people were lumping beer and drugs in the same category, when they don't belong together.

So here you go guys. Talk it up all you want. But let's leave drugs out of this ok. --~

alcohol = awesome
Beer = nasty

^Having had none of either (except for the occasional sip of wine), I reserve judgment. However, I do intend for my first beer to be a Samuel Adams. I want to start off with something rich.

As for alcohol, I don't know where to start. Maybe vodka?

Beer is wonderfully fantastic if you don't drink the crappy kinds. If it's in a can, it'll probably taste terrible.

Hard alcohol depends. I mainly drink for taste and not the result. Vodka and Whiskey make me a happy drunk. Tequila, though I love it, makes me an angry jerk.

^ give some examples of these beers, I'd like to try it out :)

I sorta like beer.

It really depends on personal tastes, but I recommend Carlsberg, Spaten (and Spaten Optimator), Guinness, Tsingtao, Fat Tire (and the other New Belgium beers), any Rogue beer, Sleeman's Canadian, Weihenstephaner (I think I spelled that one right), Sam Adams can be pretty good, and yeah, just try any of them that you can. I'm sure others'll have a lot more suggestions.

I've never been a huge beer kid, but I've warmed up to them this year. I still restrict myself to light (on taste, not alcohol!), dry beers like pilsners, and I don't drink more than a few in a row, but they're pretty good. But generally, I'm a spirits guy - bourbon, preferably, but I also enjoy tequila. And I'll take pretty much anything but vodka straight if it's offered.

I also have a soft spot for interesting cocktails :)

Hate beer with a passion. For some reason, it's just the taste and the carbonation that throw me off. That's not to say I won't ever have beer again, but for me, like wine, it really is an acquired taste.

Liquor, on the other hand, I'm all OK with. Like most of you, I drink it for the taste. Scotch, Bourbon, or Baileys (mmmmm) are all in my books.

I actually had a great shot tonight - half a shot of baileys and a half a shot of tequila. The Big O. Give it a go.

(har, har, I rhymed!)

I drink for a buzz/taste. Hell, I got buzzed yesterday after the frosh week event but couldn't find the "I'm Drunk" thread :(

Rickard's Red is a nice beer. Nice, smooth taste. I actuall bought a couple tall boys on Thursday cause I wanted to try so new stuff; Sapporo, Tuborg, Becks and Stella Artois. My roommate took the Tuborg but I had the Stella and Sapporo. They're both quite nice, but I like the Sapporo more cause it reminds me of Rickard's Red :)

Tuborg's a great beer... one of the first import beers I ever tried (the first, I think). Very nice indeed.

Some guy said that last week, lawl. He was like, "The only thing gayer than that drink's name is paying $17 for it!" Which would be a fair criticism, except that I rarely pay that much; I was out with a few mates in the city for the first time in a while and splashed out on a once-off, super-expensive festival of fruity deliciousness. And it was delicious... it was mostly blueberry and mint, but tasted quite a lot like butter menthol, to my childish delight.

My God, I'm so verbose when I'm drunk.

red stripe.. great jamaican lager.

wine is an acquired taste but the 'drunk' you get will be any others hands down. especially if it it's a fine merlot.

alcohol.. i usually prefer either mezcal or goldschlauger. a nice mix i make is, smirnoff orange twist with live wire mountain dew. i also like liquid crack.. i part jager. 1 part peppermint.. i part goldschlager cinnamon schnapps.

Red Stripe is recycled beer.

BEERS
Carling
Carlsberg
Fosters

CIDERS
Bulmers (apple)
Kopparberg (summer/winter fruits)
St Heliers (pear)
***Note: regular everyday ciders such as Strongbow and Woodpecker are ****ing vile, and do not deserve to exist.

STRONGER STUFF
Jack Goddamn Daniels, bitch, goddamn yes
Jaegermeister

Now, as mentioned before, alcohol is a drug, but one the body can completely flush out of your system provided you don't go ****ing stupid with it. I have one, maybe two big sessions per year, and the rest of the time just one or two pints a week. Drinking like this guarantees you won't become addicted or dependant on alcohol, and provides your body enough time to flush it out and leave no damage to your body.

However, there are those who drink solely to get drunk. These people deserve to have their healthy livers removed and given to people with genuine problems, cos they're just wasting theirs.

No offense, but I'd appreciate it if the "is alcohol a drug or not" argument didn't start up again in this thread.

I know some will think me less of a man because of it (lookin' at you HGW) but I have to agree with Coral in that I've never liked beer too much. I can tolerate it and I can appreciate it at a barbeque or on a hot day, but it's not my first choice of intoxicant. I'm sure HG is thinking about saying EINSPRUCH to me right now.

yay, Jack Daniel's love :)

Foster's was one of the beers I forgot about on Thursday.

So ciders are like wine-ish beer? I've never heard of them before.

I'm sorta like blokey drinking wise, except without the weekly ****. This week is probably the most beer I've had in a while and it's only been like three tallboys :D

Ciders are either cheap, nasty, and will strip paint from your car. Or they're fine drinks, carbonated or not.

I also recommend Westons Organic cider. Tastes like brandy, but at 12% and 3litres, its gonna f-you up.

I never really could get into Guiness. One of my best friends is a bit "beer snob" and its fun to hang out with him because he is always introducing me to brews I've never tasted. Speaking of which, I wonder if there is a Capital Ale house or something similar where I live now. That place has some very good and very strong beers.

I prefer hard liquor to beer, but if beer is the only option then the darker the better is generally a good rule. I'm a fan of lagers mostly, and hate hate hate light beer.

I have Guinness in my fridge right now :)

Cheap beer has its niche. It'd be considerably harder to chug your usual stouts; the night'd end real fast. Besides, when you have to provide drinks for a lot of people, higher end beers will kill your wallet.

I don't mind 'chick drinks' if they're not too light on the alcoholic content (anything over 5% is fine for a premix); hell, I had a blue daiquiri last night without batting an eyelid (they're delicious, BTW). Grog is grog. But you guys know I'm a fiend for whiskey.

It doesn't matter what you start with. My only recommendation is to adhere to one "family"; don't be drinking rum and cokes, then beer, then wine, then work around again (trust me on this one...)

Nope. I'm a ****ing straightedge. At least for another year. Depends on whether I feel like waiting for legality or not. As long as I'm dependent on my parents' good graces, I'll honor their wishes. Besides, I got $1000 on my 18th birthday for not going out to party and get wasted and ****. Pretty nice incentive there.

In alcohol, I like my rums, Redrum, Morgan's, Bacardi, whatever. Though I try to avoid the cheaper ones, like Castillo... They give bad feelings.

I also like Tanqueray Gin, Skyy Vodka, and uh....anything put in front of me....

One tip, Smokey: if you're waiting 'til you hit 21, do not wait until the night of your 21st birthday when you're surrounded by mates to start drinking. If there's one thing I didn't like about the States, it was attitudes to drinking: I saw so many people avoid alcohol like the plague until their 21st and then down a dozen (or as many as 23, in one case) drinks in one night. That's just dumb. I strongly recommend having a couple of nights, either with your family or some close mates, where you only have 5-6 and work your way up.

Smokey

That sounds like a plan. I don't think I'll do it with family, though. We're not a devout Christian family, but some of the values still run strong in my parents, and I sincerely doubt they would let a drop of alcohol in the house EVER. Luckily I have some friends I can count on in this regard, if in few others.:P

Yeah, well, we're Scottish, Russian, and German. Not really advocates of temperance, any of them. But we go to a Pentecostal church, so that probably has something to do with it. Of course, I myself am a firm believer that alcohol consumption is not a sin; one can only make a case for the overindulgence of alcohol being a sin. Incidentally, I am also a devout believer in God's mercy and the forgiveness of sins, so it will all work out.:)
