Are they nescessary?

So far in the preseason

Osi Umenyiora is out for season
Maurice Jones-Drew sprains an ankle
Sean Merriman tears 2 ligaments

Thats 3 teams who have star players injured.

I also remember that Michael Vick broke his leg against the Vikings years ago

Thankfully Mo of the Jo variant will be back right away. Turns out Del Rio was just being exceptionally cautious. But yes, I think they're very necessary, especially now that training camps have become such a vacation. You need a game-like environment to figure out how to bring it down to 53 by season open.

eh, I often view preseason games as a way of extending the actual season and a way to sell more tickets and merchandise and all that stuff.

I think all athletes in sports need some sort of preseason. You can't just jump in and start playing without having done much over the summer. I think what's more of a problem and factor to injuries and what not is the actual length, intensity and type of preseaons that teams or sport organizations create.

Panthers played pretty damn well last night, that's all I'm saying. Yes, I know it was the Redskins, but still.

My team just got crushed by Carolina and we were lucky to make it out of Charlotte with Jason Taylor reasonably intact. I am still surprised that Osi is out for the year. If you watch the replay of both he and Jason Taylor's injuries it looked Jason Taylor was done for the year.
With NFL Europe done, the preseason needs to be more of a showcase for draft picks, UDFAs, and young guys just trying to make the team.
