I can't believe it... Nintendo and Silicon Knights have the relationship of Nintendo and Rare in the 1990s... there is no possible way that this can happen... at least I hope

I don't know why nintendo would do this, it seemed like everything was going smoothly. ED and MGS TTS were so good, why would Nintendo let them go? It just doesn't make any sense.

at first glance, i thought SK left nintendo and left them completely.. thank goodness it's not true.. anyway, i mentioned in the comment box, that if this report was false, what would be the occasion?

so, as long as SK continues to make [hopefully, (some) exclusive titles] games for nintendo.. i'm not as worried.. but gafu**in damn THIS SH** BETTER NOT FU*K** true :)

Damn IGN and it's insider whoreness. There's almost 18 pages, aka 400 plus posts on this topic, and I can't see one damned one of them. I still don't believe this sh!t. IGN are the only one's who got the info so far, Gamespot looks like are citing the same thing IGN submitted. And I wouldn't trust either for reliable news. They are the one's that sold out to M$, not SK. Besides, Too Human as an excuse to leave Ninty's camp? Is everyone on CRACK?! Not only would they get LESS time to work on it, which is what SK loves about working with Ninty, they would also be pressured to make it for a console this generation. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING about this move makes sense, besides the fact that SK may make more money by doing this move and branching to other developers. But none of their core beliefs and ways that they make games so far will be kept, no one except Ninty lets developers get away with that many delays. SO the only reason for this would be money. I really can't see this happening... over money, that is... if it does turn out to be true, I've lost all respect I have towards SK.

Wow this is pretty comical, I'm waiting for you guys to turn on SK like you did Rareware in a week or so once you realize this is true. Also how is this profitable for SK? Are YOU on crack? Worst case scenario: SK goes to Rockstar and has them republish ED on PS2/Xbox and it makes 3x the money

Best case scenario: SK goes to EA and EA publishes Too Human on all 3 systems and it makes SK like 2039023x richer then they were. How do you see this as a bad thing? I thought you wanted your beloved SK to suceed right? So you should be happy they wised up.

I think he means quality over quantity, or the "Disney way" which is make stuff for kids first, hope adults like it to, but even Disney has Miramax, SK was Nintedno's Miramax.

how nintendo are excessively stubborn about gameplay value and innovation.. and yes, quality over quantity is the overall feel that i get over Nintendo.. i actually like the fact that they target kids, and adults.. they leave their games open for anyone to play.. in my opinion.. every company is a business, and money is important.. but i feel as though Nintendo chooses quality first.. over money

Eric-AMN
04-15-2004, 04:56 PM
My only hope is that SK will not be threatened as an individual entity by this move and that they'd think long and hard about what working for MS would mean. Unless Denis could (and I believe he would) get some sort of "creativity clause" included in a contract, I doubt he'd let a company buy them out.

Still, I dont know if it will be easy for SK to find a third party publisher for their games. But who can say?

I believe Retro is based in Texas.

I remember an article about how Nintendo and Silicon Knights where so alike and how they had the same goals and thought the same way, and now they break up for the complete opposite reason, its strange

rogue_gamecube
04-17-2004, 11:20 AM
OK, lets bring all this back into context and look at WHY this is happening...

First, from a pure money point of view, SK would only make a bit more than what they do already, and that's if they go multi-platform. They are a recognised and respected Ninty developer, and thusly have a large and established fanbase already. Spreading out and doing a multi-platform release will work only if it includes Ninty, otherwise the combined sales from Sony and M$ would be about the same, or a little more. This is purely based on the fact that SK is going to start out without any real fanbase for themselves on either of those fronts. Thereby, the only real way they could make a lot of money is if they sell their soul to M$ or Sony for Second Party status for a very big truckload of money. However, both sides are doing decently right now, and may compete a little to see who gets SK, thusly amounting to a not-so-big truckload of money. Therefore, there is no real advantage to any of these endeavours, which will be supported in the next paragraphs.

Secondly is their ideals, that being quality in games and story telling. Practically, that means much more time for development of said games. Above all else, this should be the biggest sign of foul play in this announcement. Neither Sony, nor M$, take kindly to long development times. Especially Sony. Thereby, if SK was planning on a multi-platform release, their renowned quality will suffer from the constant badgering to release "on time". Ninty has always given developers more time to perfect their games, which is a very good reason why SK has stood with Ninty for so long. Therefore, there is still no real advantage to go multi-platform, or any other platform besides Ninty whatsoever.

Third, the arguement that they want to pursue more "real life and technology pushing graphics". If anything, Ninty's console has proved to be the most graphics-pushing console of this generation. Eternal Darkness really shone as an early release title (SK title no less), and Metroid Prime is another masterpiece pushing the boundries as well. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles really showed that Sony's console is not the best one for incredible graphics and fmv's, and Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker proved Ninty's ability to take risks for the sake of innovative artstyle and graphics that no one else thought could work. On top of this, we have seen Resident Evil 4, only from movies in-game, that it has undendiably the best realistic-graphics ever to grace a console thus far. Another important point, I might add, is that almost all of the afore mentioned titles use the game engine for fmv sequences. For those of you who don't know, that means all the "movies" in between gameplay. What all this boils down to is that the Gamecube has proven to be the most realistic-graphics pushing console this generation has seen. And yes, I do mean beyond the Xbox too. While it may have more "power" on paper, it's the developers who have produced the top quality software to push the Gamecube to its limits. All I have seen done on the Xbox is objects looking "shinier". This is not realistic, the real world is not perfect and shiny. The real world is full of unique textures and surfaces, rarely ever smooth and reflective. Even water, in general, is never clear and smooth as glass. Go to a nearby pond and you'll see what I mean. Anyways, enough of this rant, what this all boils down to is that for SK to leave on account of "pursuit of greater real-life graphics pushing consoles" is nothing short of a cop-out, a downright lie. Therefore, this is another reason proved false for SK to leave Ninty's camp.

In conclusion, all signs that said why SK should leave Ninty have all proven false and misjudged. This leaves nothing, and I mean NOTHING, that could warrent a move like this by SK. There's something more to this announcement which has not been said, and there are rumours a plenty to what is going to be said. I like the theory that this is merely a media ploy, harking to the sanity effects used in Eternal Darkness, and in reality is a joke to raise attention to the announcement of Eternal Darkness 2 that's coming either before, or during E3. Don't take this as accurate, it is simply a theory, a rumour, to try and explain this latest series of events. In closing, the one good advice I give to you people is this: don't believe a word of this announcement until E3. One thing's for sure, there never has been such a suspenseful E3 for quite some time. Keep them fingers crossed.

What outlaw said was true, CNN announced it at 3:33 pm, on april 13, precisely 33 days before the end of E3. That is far to many coincidences...

rogue_gamecube
04-18-2004, 05:28 PM
Good good, at least I'm not the only one here who's mourning the loss of SK. Whats more, that hasty editorial that so-and-so wrote almost a day after the announcement really clinched this for me. I had to make the facts known, because people like that are the same ones that are professing the downfall of Ninty to 3rd party status, N5 as powerful as Gamecube and M$ buying out Ninty. They work with very few facts, and rely on heresay and rumour to support themselves. And you're damned right, I should be doing editorials. Though a lot of GCA's older editorials make sense, the recent one's are going downhill. Oh well, I'm too "Here now, back again weeks later." Can't devote myself to much responsibility right now, exams and moving out of residence happening soon. All combine to form one sodomized time schedule. At least it's good to see that you guys still come around enough to make these posts worthwhile. Not many others read 'em, damned hippies... - P&J

If you're serious... hmm... this may just be a sanity effect. It certainly feels like one. ...I still remember when I got "Thanks for playing the Eternal Darkness Demo." That freaked me out more than when my limbs started to fall off my character's body.

The whole thing about the 3's mention above is looking pretty likely, especially when you consider Planet Gamecube also posted the story at 3:33 (15:33 on their 24 hour site clock). As did GamerFeed.com. To me this theory has maybe a 85% chance of being accurate what with so many different sites posting it at exactly the same moment.

Well I have to admit that I would like to think better of this situation but according to some people I know...there was an e-mail passed through NOA announcing SK's split from Nintendo. IF this is a sanity effect then I will forever love SK and not because they stayed with Nintendo, but because they pulled in my opinion the greatest prank if they even have NOA employee's thinking they are gone.

In reality, they are most likely gone. But it isn't the end of the world people. So IF Sk really is gone just relax, the world is still turning.
