The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King...

WOW...

Tying Ben-Hur and Titanic in winning awards... winning all its categories.

Too predictable though.

What was too predictable? That they were going to win? I think maybe the fact that no fantasy in history has ever won the award for Best Picture cast doubt. In any case, Lord of the Rings chewed up The Matrix and Star Wars and pooped out Sophia Coppola.

I just find it funny when it wins Original This and Original That when it is the third film in the series and it incorporates everything seen in the first two.

it didn't win original anything except score. all the rest were 'best' or 'outstanding achievement' awards.

it was predictable, but only b/c it deserved to sweep the oscars all three years it was nominated for anything and didn't. of course, they were kind of planning on honoring it the third time out anyway.

And it's based on novels. --~

EDIT: Was Big Fish up for anything this year, or will it be next year? --~

It's the first time that I've agreed with the end result on an award show. That movie deserved everyone of those awards.

Yeah, it's a shame NONE of the actors were nominated though, but it's also a shame that Sean Pinn won best actor over my man Johnny D. and Ed Harris, I mean Bill Murray. He only won, in my opinion, because he had a much more dramatic role, not because he was better. PLUS, he shouldn't have been there anyway, Tim Robbins should have been, he was the star of the movie, but somehow he got best supporting actor, which he deserved because that's the category that he was nominated in, but he really deserved to be nominated for and win best actor. --~

I didn't think it deserved half the awards it got. The problem with the oscers is that while the Accademy is made up of people from the industry, many people in the industry these days don't know a thing about film.
I'd just also like to say that ,as token New Zealander, no one was more annoyed at every single person from LotR thanking every man, woman and chiled in the country than we were ;P
...at least they'd got the point by the end of the show (after repeated 'jokes' by Billy Crystal.

Titanic didn't win all the awards. Kate Winslet got pooped by Helen Hunt. Remember?

It is too bad Pirates of the Carribean didn't win more awards.

Oh, it's being compared to Ben Hur and Titanic because it won 11 awards. But LOTR won every award last night.

i love pirates of the caribbean, but i also realize it's a good movie, but not a good film. really, you get almost nothing out of it. it's a total popcorn movie. probably the best one ever, but still...not a good FILM, per se.

It's a great popcorn flick but shouldn't be considered oscar-worthy imo. Although Charlie's Angels 2: Full Throttle was sorely overlooked this year.

Did it win ANY? I don't remember that it did.

I think what got sorely overlooked this year was "Bring Down the House." It was actually quite brilliant, as well as moving and profound. I went expecting a good time and a few laughs. I came out having been moved by the inciteful social commentary and had a deeper understanding and appreciation for the differences between white people and African Americans. It also opened my eyes to the hardships and unfair treatment that African Americans are STILL made to face everyday. This movie truly changed my life and yet it was totally overlooked by the academy. --~

True that. I'd never really though of it that way though. I still think Jack Sparrow is one of the best characters from any film. Hah, he made me laugh:D

i LOVE johnny depp as captain sparrow, and like i said, it's one of the best popcorn flicks in the world, but that's probably about it.

i agree with ian on 'bringing down the house', but not with the prof on 'charlie's angels'...it was nominated for a few razzies, so it's all good.

Pirates may have been a popcorn film, but for all intents and purposes Starwars was as well...and it won seven oscars.

Hmmm, that might be true. I wish that there was an award for most entertaining, cuz that would probably have gone to Pirates. --~

It's hard to believe that PotC was inspired by an old amusment ride (don't that usually work the other way round?).

I loved PotC and am really looking forward to the sequel - just hope it's at least AS good.

yeah, but check out what it won for:

art direction
costume design
film editing
music
sound
visual effects
special achievement award for creation of voices

that's all the stuff that LotR won for, minus all the awards that recognize it as a good FILM, and it totally deserved all of that. pirates, didn't. you have to understand, though, that star wars was a movie on par with LotR at the time, not with pirates...they were well-crafted films, but many people viewed them as such, it was a popcorn movie by today's standards, but back then it was as big a film as peter jackson's trilogy, hence it winning mostly technical awards...

...i would venture to say, as well, that LotR is a better trilogy than star wars, b/c it actually has many, many layers, and despite what star wars fans say, star wars has nowhere near as many layers (i know, i'm a star wars fan). i mean, i'll say it aloud: star wars was great movies, but not good films by any means of the word, except for MAYBE 'empire'.

i should also note that star wars WON six oscars and was GIVEN one.

It's like I stated in the Star Wars on DVD thread... Star Wars was intended to be NOTHING MORE than a visual showcase for the technology that Lucas's ILM had developed. It was eye candy with a bit of a story thrown in.

(I am also a HUGE Star Wars fan, before anyone starts having a pop at me!)

Alright! L of the R won 10/11 awards! I knew it was the best! And don't think I didn't like L of the R until the movie. I started reading them in 4th grade, two years before the 1st movie.
