Ok, I had the chance to see this movie ahead of time, and it was freaking fantastic. Go see it.
HOWEVER, I will make something perfectly clear - the writers of the script, just as the writers of the actual comics are beginning to do and just as the writers of Smallville did, have basically figured out that in order to make Superman INTERESTING, they have to essentially rip Spiderman off. For those who wonder what I mean, when Stan Lee created Spiderman, the point was to create a hero that wasnt perfect, and dealt with issues other than supervillains. In many cases, that meant being put into situations that pulled him in two opposite directions, and then dealing with the resulting emotional turmoil. There is ALOT of it in this movie, and those fans of the Spidey comics will likely be able to actually pinpoint comic-book influences for many of such conflicts.

I have lost faith in virtually all classic movie remakes, so I'll wait till DVD if I decide to see it at all. I'm sure it can't even begin to touch the series done in the 80s.

I really want to see this movie since I am huge fan of smallville, but the thing that seams weird abot this movie is how Lois has a kid. It seams out of place in the world of superman, but maybe its neccesary for the movie since I have not seen it yet.

What's this ordeal about Superman probably being gay? Tell me tell me...
Luis Sera

Let's see.. The director of the movie, Bryan Singer, is openly gay. Kevin Spacey also appears to be gay, though his official stance is "My sexuality should not matter" (Look it up, bitches.), and people are saying that Brandon Routh, the actor who plays Superman, is gay. That's pretty gay.
Aaaaaaand who gives a ****? It's a movie. Bryan Singer is easily one of the best directors out there right now, Spacey is one of the best actors, and Routh's appears to be a talented up and comer. So who gives a ****, really? It's a movie. They're actors. Get over it homophobes.
And, the idea is just so stupid, who could believe it? He's in love with a woman. What the hell does that tell you? Rumors kill kittens.

Where'd you get homophobes from? I heard people on TV talking about it obsessively and it's interesting to see why. That is all.

I got it from the internet.
What response were you hoping for, after watching it on TV, what were you hoping someone on the forum would tell you? What possessed you to post it in a thread about 'Superman Returns' the movie?

I dunno.. it's a thread about Superman, so I asked. That's called 'normal' where I come from. Anyway, today we're going to the movies, so we may watch this flick, but my brother wants to see Nacho Libre :(

^Was it funny or mind-numbingly silly like most of Black's movies? I hear good things about it, but then again... it's Jack Black :D
EDIT: Just saw Nacho Libre, and it's hilarious.

I have JUST seen the movie in IMAX 3D. It was really great. They did a fantastic job and I definitely suggest that everybody go see it!
Not as good as X-men 3...but still, VERY GOOD.

Not as good as X-men 3...but still, VERY GOOD.wtf..
w...t...f.. did you just say...
I'm trying to fathom how what you said could make any sense..
So, it's not as good as the film equivalent of furiously vomiting in your own mouth while shooting your self repeatedly in the face while being rectally violated by thirty-seven angry rodeo clowns.... but it's still "VERY GOOD." Does not compute.
Honestly, X3 ruined the franchise for me, so wow.. now I'm scared to see Superman Returns. I mean, how it could be not be better than X3, it was directed by Bryan Singer.. Wow, I dunno, maybe you just have an affinity movies with no substance.. Yeah, that's it.. you're just.. your tastes differ.. Superman Returns really couldn't be that bad..

The trailer on G4 is enough to induce hysteric laughing fits, but then again, Batman Begins's Trailer sucked hardcore and the movie was brilliant beyond discription, so I'll be seeing this one at the Imax theatre. Here's hoping they can do for Superman what they did for Batman last year.

I agree with the above sentiment. Watching the trailers does not make me want to see the movie, it in fact doesn't look like a very good movie from the trailers, like for instance from what I've seen I don't like Spacey as Lex.. (I know Smallville is uncool, but honestly Michael Rosenbaum is Lex Luthor to me, he's the best I've seen.) but, I basically want to see it because of Bryan Singer. I have lots of faith in Singer. He's awesome.
No. I see where you are coming from but there would be no Spider-Man without Superman. Alter ego, over-the-top editor, etc.etc. Spider-Man movies ripped off Superman movies and tv shows, even down to Maguire pulling away his shirt to reveal the Spider-Man costume, which is a BLATANT rip-off of Superman in all forms. Yes, Superman started out as perfect, but in the 60s and into the 70s he became a character will less power and more internal struggle. Again, I see your anger, but if you compare the two characters, Spider-man took more from Superman.

the fact that Superman is much older than Spiderman might just mean something as well.
I enjoyed the movie very much. Great action, Good story, and a lot of heart. It's inspiring.

Bryan Singer has this to say when asked about Superman being homosexual:
"He's not. He's been around forever, and the whole point of the Superman story is that he's in love with a woman, Lois Lane. This is the most heterosexual movie Ive ever made."
As for Superman ripping off Spiderman, obviously Spiderman borrowed some ideas from Superman, since he was one of the first popular Superheroes. I just feel that Spiderman profoundly altered the way in which Superhero comics were written through making the superhero an everyman with real problems to balance out with fighting supervillains. I feel that Superman changed once Spiderman proved the popularity of that concept with fans.
Luis:
Ken may have different tastes in Superhero movies. Shawn also liked X-Men 3. I didnt HATE the movie, but I was incredibly disappointed with it. Here's my breakdown of the best (of the recent) superhero movies.
1) Batman Begins
2) Spiderman 2
3) X-Men 2
4) Sin City
5) V for Vendetta
6) Superman
7) X-Men
8) Spiderman
9) The Hulk

Yeah, I mostly agree with your list Sascha, though I would place X-3 a bit higher since I also thought it was good. Not as good as X-2 and Sin City, but still very well done considering that it didn't have Singer at the helm of the project.
I think it may be the fact that many people understimated Ratner to deliver a solid X-Men flick, but I've heard more people say they like it than people who didn't -- probably because they're not comic fans, who knows, but I know I am one, and even though the movie was not entirely faithful to the comics, I still thought it was quite a good movie.
And well, since Sascha posted his top ten, I will do the same. :D
1) X-2
2) Sin City
3) Spiderman 2
4) Batman Begins
5) X-Men
6) X-3
7) Spiderman
8) The Hulk <----- wow, I didn't think Sascha would have this one!
9) Daredevil <----- I ran out of choices because I didn't watch V for Vendetta, and haven't watched Superman Returns.
10) I said no more choices!

2) Batman Begins
3) Spider-Man 2
4) Sin City
5) Spider-Man
6) Superman Returns/X-Men
8) Being rectally violated by a flaming spear wielded by a particularly viciouscrack head and slowly burning to death.

I didn't underestimate Ratner. I'm a big fan of the Rush Hour movies. X-Men is however, not Rush Hour. And X3 wasn't just Ratner's disaster, the writing was horrendous. It was a team effort to ruin the series.
About Superman Returns.. it was just ok.. whatever.. not terrible, not exceptional.. I wish Singer would have just done X3.. he would've made more money, and he would've made a better movie..

Okay, I just bought V for Vendetta on DVD, but haven't had a chance to see it.
I did, however, watch Superman Returns. Twice.
I absolutely loved it. I know that many people will knock the movie off because of its apparent lack of "action sequences", and a somewhat of a left turn when it comes to comic integrity, but I thought its story was brilliantly told. I actually think that they needed to shake up the Superman story a bit in order to create something that would grab the interest of both old and new fans.
I also think Brandon Routh did an excellent job with the character. I hear that people complain about the lack of "dialogue" the main character has, but so what? That's how Superman/Clark Kent is. He's no ladies man, he's basically a geek who’s not very good with words. Brandon Routh did the character proud. Kate Bosworth was also great, and extremely underrated as an actress. Kevin Spacey was great, although underdeveloped (in the sense that there's not much to see about him -- I would have loved more Lex scenes). James Marsden was also a great character, even though he was more of a secondary one.
Basically, all I can hope is that the movie does indeed break the 200 million needed to guarantee a sequel. Though I'm not keeping my hopes up, I'd certainly want to see another one. What I loved most about the movie, though, is that you can definitely see that someone who loves the Superman character directed this film. And isn't that what directing is all about?
I didn't underestimate Ratner. I'm a big fan of the Rush Hour movies. X-Men is however, not Rush Hour. And X3 wasn't just Ratner's disaster, the writing was horrendous. It was a team effort to ruin the series.

You do know that X-3's script was the same one that was going to be used by Singer, right? The script was already decided when both of them decided to trade spots (Ratner was directing Superman Returns, and Singer was directing X-3 at the same time). So basically, we would've gotten the same story, but with different points of view when it came to direction. I still think that Singer's vision may have been a bit more interesting to me, but the story was already set in stone even before Singer left.
I still think Ratner did a good job, though.

I saw Superman Returns in IMAX 3D, as well, and thought it was definitely worth seeing. The 3D wasn't particularly well done and by the end of the film was more annoying that anything, but it worked well for scenes without any fast-moving action and added some novelty factor to the experience. They took some serious liberties with the script, as hollywood is apt to do, and some aspects of the direction they decided to take just annoyed me. Overall, though, it was a great movie and worth seeing on the big screen. I never knew Kevin Spacey was rumored to be gay, though.
I haven't seen X-Men 3 yet, so I'll probably end up missing out and having to wait for the DVD release. I've always been a big fan of the X-Men license, and it was one of my favorite comics as a kid, so sometimes I even enjoy the crappy X-Men stuff just by default, if you know what I mean.
As for film adaptations of comics, I think my favorite ones are Batman Begins, Sin City and V for Vendetta. Those three movies are possibly my favorite ones since the Lord of the Rings series wrapped up.
