What's everyone think about this movie?

It's the one that sparked a ton of controversy. People calling Mel Gibson an anti-semitic and saying the movie will start anti-semitisim.

And then the Pope saying "It is as it was"... or mabye he didn't.

I will be there on day one to see this, I am very excited as I am sure it will be the spark thatt lights the fire under many peoples asses to get back to church and hopefull bring religion back in full swing

I will be seeing it opening day. I, too, am excited about the prospects of the realization of this movie. My church couldn't secure tickets they sold out so fast, so I'll be seeing it much earlier in the day.

Why is the movie being considered anti-semitic? It's not like it's condemning the jewish race or anything. That's like saying all russians are murderers because of what Stalin did...

People are afraid it will spark violence against the jews, which I have no doubt it will to a certain extent. Keep in mind, there are a lot of stupid people out there. I remember hearing of a taxi driver who was shot in the head after 9-11 happened.

Also, apparently the script was written based on both the bible as well as the views of a few radical (not sure that is the correct word) catholic priests

I think many people realize this is free speech but they feel much harm can come from this film

I'd like to see it, but I don't know when I'll have a chance. It's mostly based off the Bible I believe, but I hope it doesn't spark any anti-semitism.

It will be an interesting movie to say the least...

A movie shouldn't be needed.

Very true, but unfortunately this day in age, that's what moves people.

Yeah..there are a lot of stupid people out there that do things for no reason and without putting much thought into it...however, as no one can predict what it will spark lets just hope for the best. I'm sure this movie hits people in a very vulnerable spot being the last 12 hours of Jesus' life i believe, but we as humans have to be able to live where I don't know how to say it really but live where well stupid things don't happen. An unplausible hope really, but one of my most important.

I just wish we were a more enlightened people....

From what i hear it is directly following the bible passages, taken as a factual account not as a promotional piece thatis used by a group of radicals pushing an agendia

yeah, everyone seems to think it was the jewish who killed jesus, but that is a lie. it was the romans....

on a more light-hearted note, i feel a little sorry for the guy playing jesus. imagine if he delivers a bad performance. im sure people would say, 'What he won an oscar for that? Please, he couldnt do a decent jesus if his life depended on it'..... j/k

I hope this doesnt have any baring on the credibility of this film but apparently Mel Gibson's father may be an anti-semetic himself. Apparently he doesnt feel the holocaust ever happened.

Obviously this doesnt necessarily have anything to do with Mel Gibson's beliefs, lets no forget Arnold's father was an avid Nazi supporter and Arnold definitely is not. I just find it interesting that the son of an anti-semite has created a film considered to be anti-semetic

Also, anyone else hear about that the actor who plays Jesus was struck by lightning during the filming and recieved various other injuries as well? Eerie...

lol the bible does that too... the romans asked if they would like to free jesus or a murder, they then paid off the jews there to pick the murderer... its all there, and mel just moved it from words to the big screen....

well, at first my whole deal was, 'i got this in the mail last year on vhs for free and STILL didn't watch it'. now, however, it just appears to be even more stupid than that.

anyways, about the anti-semitism and mel gibson...it's possible. i mean, just the other day his dad was going on about how the holocaust was made up and was part of a jewish world conspiracy and yadda yadda yadda. i'm not saying that mel is, but he wouldn't even say he disagreed with his father, only that he loved his dad very much and wouldn't speak out against him. now, what is weird about that is that he could easily have said something like this: "i love my dad very much, but on this point i disagree with him." he didn't do that. so, anti-semite? maybe. i'm not pointing fingers b/c i really don't care all that much, and it's a stupid thing to say the holocaust didn't happen anyways...

however, my main contention is that i have no interest in seeing the story of jesus AGAIN when i've 1)read it, 2)been taught it, 3)seen plays, 4)read novels or seen movies/fictional accounts of jesus ('the last temptation of christ' comes to mind) and 5) got the story on vhs last year and didn't watch it then....and it was free.

anyways, to summarize: no, i won't be going to see this movie. and yes, maybe mel gibson's anti-semitic....i'm just not going to formally comment on it much more than i already have.

You know, this movie probally wouldn't be a big deal if Christianity wasnt the most practiced religion in North America. of course, if that was true, then they would make a movie like 'The Passion of David' or something along those lines. movies are getting worse aand worse by the day. i probally wont see this.... like every other movie i've wanted and not wanted to see for the past 3 years.

who turned Jesus over to the romans? Pilate didn't even want to kill Jesus. Luke 23:13-16 "Pilate then called the chief priests and the rulers and the people together 14 and said to them: "YOU brought this man to me as one inciting the people to revolt, and, look! I examined him in front of YOU but found in this man no ground for the charges YOU are bringing against him. 15 In fact, neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us; and, look! nothing deserving of death has been committed by him. 16 I will therefore chastise him and release him."

but the Jews pressured him.
so the Bible says, the Jews killed the Christ who was born a Jew. (not that the romans are not at any fault here)

Well yes and no. Certainly a film about the life of Mohammed wouldn't be nearly as high profile or popular, but regardless of what religon is most common in the country this film would cause controversy over supposedly portraying an entire group in a negative light and possibly instigating crimes against this group.

I fear that this post will get a lot of backlash and I am not proud in posting it, but I had mixed feelings about the film, of which I just got back from.

The Good: You will probably never, ever see a more greusome, gritty, unabashedly writhing depiction of Christ without it teetering over the brink of gratuitousness. The pain and suffering that Jesus goes through is almost unimaginable and you could not have asked for a better actor than Jim Caviezel to have taken up the role - Caviezel is Jesus in this movie. He is someone you cannot take your eyes off of and whose portrayal of pain and peace and earnestness is completely winning.

In addition, Maia Morgenstern and Monical Bellucci are just cringingly honest and amazing actresses as Mary and Mary Magdalen. These three had me in tears, especially the scenes of flashback to Jesus's younger life and his compassion toward his own mother and Magdalen herself.

Satan himself shows up in the flick, creepy as all get-out, watching history unfurl, taking in the pleasure of sadism brought on by the Romans and you can't help but want to know more about all of them - which brings me to the not-so-good part.

The Bad: Although this movie brought out a lot of feelings in me, guilt, anger, sadness, horror - I admit the only reason that is, is because I have a background in the history and understand why things are going on - why things happened, what it all means.

YES Jesus suffered, yes Jesus went through horrible, disturbing circumstances and died for everyones' sins and it resonates like fire in many peoples' hearts - but to what end? Why? The movie seems to simply be a brief glimpse into the death of Jesus Christ, and really, nothing more. And although this makes for a beautiful glimpse, it contains absolutely no context, and thus, Jesus having died on the cross for us is only important to the devout.

To watch Jesus suffer like this deserves an explanation and deserves a reason and deserves more than what was given to us. If I were not a Christian or if I did not know the bible, I would have almost no idea what in the world was going on.

So in this film, it is clear you have conviction, but where is the grace? It's obvious that you have a want to follow the scripture, but where is the spirituality? Without having read the New Testament or at least read some sort of biblical CLiff Notes, this movie will probably be a little bit disturbing and unfortunately, an empty endeavor to bring out the Passion in you.

Should Kids see this movie?

I wouldn't take my child in a million years to see this movie. I would never ever EVER subject any child to see this film no matter how much I believed it would benefit them. Even I was horrified and I used to watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre eating breakfast when I was 7!

The good part is that this film made me want to read the bible more than ever so I can understand what exactly was happening, though and I am happy that this movie will inspire others to do the same, as well as make Christians, particularly Catholics, extremely happy!

Well I think pretty much everyone has a good idea who Jesus was and what happened to him..like 99% of the world.

Professor Go
02-26-2004, 05:47 PM
I doubt that people understand the context of what happened during the Passion though. They may know who Jesus is and who he stands for but perhaps not the relationship to mary magdalene, his apostles and the political standings between the Jews and Romans.

Pretty darn touching movie. Caught myself trying to hold back the tears a couple of times....and I NEVER, NEVER cry in movies.

When the movie was done (in the 500+ seating stadium) everybody was silent and sitting. When everybody started to finally leave, still silent. Usually all are talking and making a rukus, but everybody was silent and walking in single file, thinking.

Very powerful movie.

The Passion of the Christ is a movie that is good for many to see. It's not just for Christians, but those of the Jewish faith, athiests, and other religons could find it an interesting movie.

This movie shows the pain Jesus went through.

If you can not handle the violence of someone getting shot in a movie, this isn't one for you. It's not one for the young children either, and those who get upset at the sight of blood. You will see a man beaten and whipped... 60 times, and you'll see the cuts and the blood each time. Then there is the crucifying of Jesus. The nail being driven through his hand... the blood splattering...

violence is still violence, whether it's neo offing security guards, uma thurman chopping up assassins or jesus being crucified. it's all the same, and it's hypocritical when any other movie comes out to cause a stir b/c of violent content. i will hold this over peoples' heads every time ANYONE ever says anything about violence in film or television or videogames.

wow, i think you misread all of my post. i meant that people are hypocritical in taking their kids to see this movie just b/c it was jesus and he went through it by saying "the violence is in context".

well, excuse me, but there are very few movies made where violence isn't in context of the film you're watching. i, however, know people who won't let their teens watch PG-13 rated movies and took their five year olds to see this ****. THAT's bull**** and completely hypocritical.

i think that the people are just stupid. i wouldn't take my kids to see this film if they were under 13 unless i had brought them up like me. they have to realize that it's still just a movie, and i don't think these parents are telling them that. "no billy, this really happened, all this is real." that could **** a kid up. you have to explain things to children.

i expect there will be a strain of elementary school crucifixions in the near future, since most everyone that says ****e like this anti-violence stuff is afraid violence in film leads to violence in real life.

This is the most powerful movie I have ever seen. I have said this before on the shout, but that won't last long and the important people likely won't get to read it. And, Matt, we can say this REALLY happend since it is basically, to the letter, what the Bible chronicles of the last days of Christ. So, as far as we know, this DID happen. They've scientifically proven that a "Jesus" existed at that time, too. I think you all know what I mean by that, the artifact was found and tested not too long ago. It is a great movie and, as has been said before, something that anyone can go see, and should go see. I may be a little biased, being Christian, BUT it is much deeper and thought provoking than anything else out now. If you want to look at its literal merit to an atheist, it accurately represents the culture and society back then, along with the torture and punishments that were inflicted.

Anyways, enough talking. Go see this movie, it's well worth it. Mell Gibson did an incredible job, I will never doubt this mans talents again. Go see. Now... Stop sitting there! NOW!

I never doubted Mel Gibson's talent. He is a good director. Next to Tim Burton and Peter JAckson and Sam Raimi

Has good old Mel directed anything else?

Did you guys know that Mel Gibsons dad has been quoted as saying that a lot of the holocaust was made up?

Professor Go

He was saying stuff like that up to the opening of the movie. He is part of a Catholic sect that feels that way.

And to say Mel is on par with the great directors of our time I think is giving him way too much credit.

Mel Gibson's dad is a douche, I believe he went on to a few more antisemetic remarks, and they werent good ones either! They really need to come up with more than "Jews run the banks and media" It's getting old, give us something new already!

mel directed:

braveheart
the man without a face
the passion

i agree, braveheart was great, but one of the best directors of our time? sheesh, out of three films you can't POSSIBLY judge that.

So... things your parents do and say play a part in what kind of person you become. Didn't Mel say his wife would burn in hell for....something. I can't remember, but it was rediculous. I think it's cause she doesn't have faith or something.

Matt

Yeah, but Mel Gibson hasn't said anti-semitic things, and he himself said to be anti-semitic is to be unChristian.

Edited for direct attack on a staff member.

You realize that when you are warned for flaming others, and then you attack a member of the staff you are going to end up warned again?

The GCA Staff/Modeartor...

If you like violent movies.. I'd recommend it. There is really no other reason to see it, imo. If it had less violence and gore, and the media constantly emphasising those points... I don't think it would have done nearly as well in the box office.

I heard that it's on path to beat out titanic and star wars as largest grossing film released. It'll probably make it. For the same reason Al Frankin's book sold as well as it did, a whole lot of free publicity. --~

The Passion has become the Titanic of religious-themed movies. Has anyone checked out The Book of Mormon Movie?

http://www.bookofmormonmovie.com/homebottm.jpg

Which looked impressive until I saw the stupid quotes from movie reviewers about the movie that seemed to be picking through bad reviews to find one line that made the movie sound good. So I just went here and saw how most reviewers reacted:

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/TheBookofMormonMovieVolume1TheJourney-10003327/reviews.php?rtp=1

And then I realized I just wasted my life thinking about anything Mormon.

Boondock Saint
03-23-2004, 05:51 PM
but dude, how would they ever be able to really pull off an entire series based on the book of mormon? they'd have to reissue endless director's cuts with completely different messages and outcomes because that's what they do with the actual book...reissue it with different passages every few years because they dont' even know what they want the book to be...

This movie was overlong, tedious and didn't serve it's point. It makes the people feel scared into believing, and doesn't point out any of Christ's message of love and hope. That should be the central message of any Christian film. At least the ones not actively sponsored by churches do that, like Scorcese's The Last Temptation of Christ. That film was considered blasphemy by the church and it at least had the messages of love and hope for humanity in it.
