Check it out over here: http://revolution.nintendo.com/

Read it on IGN, and I hated it. Saw the little intro video of it on the revolution website above from Nintendo, and now its growing on me. But all and all, it ain't REVOLUTION, the best moniker Nintendo could have given its console. It made alot of sense on so many levels. Too bad they didn't stick with it.

Brian-AMN

It is pretty horrible. I mean, they say it's simple but it's so confusing. It isn't spelled like it sounds, and is totally unmarketable. It doesn't even remotely sound cool, which is at least important for Western audiences and could seriously hinder sales. I'm not sure I can even own something called a Wii. It's absolutely ridiculous that they didn't just stick with the name Revolution, which has acquired mainstream acceptance. I think this is a terrible move and am still praying that I wake up from this nightmare.

Somehow I doubt this name will help Nintendo get over their kiddy image, seeing as everyone will be chuckling as people call Nintendo's newest console the phonetic equivelant of the 'wee' console. Pass me the 'wee' controller, so I can play the 'wee' games on the 'wee' console.

This cant help them in North America. Youd think Reggie, outspoken as he is, would - over the course of the meeting this was decided - raise his hand and say 'You know, I dont think this **** if gonna fly in America.'

Lol, damn a lot of hate for it..... Personally, I think it's a pretty damn cool concept.

For almost a year, my college class spent a lot of time talking about designing a personal business name, personal logos, symbolism with colors, shape, form, marketing your logo, and all that jazz.

Wii is pretty clevor I think.

Well luckily MOST people don't say "I'm playing with my ___(console)____"

So instead, it'll sound like "I'm playing Wii right now, leave me alone!" or something.

I still relate it mostly to meaning "small" though, which fits the console's description as well. "Wii" when I keep thinking about it is pretty cool. I wouldn't say BETTER than "REvolution" but I'd say it's on par.

Romanticism and marketing rarely overlap. Name brand is important - no one would buy a car named 'junkheap' even if it outpaced a Ferrari.

Oh, and a possible slogan for the console: "Nintendo Wii - WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW?!'

Wow! Everyone really hates it. Well, so do I.

But still, I see where Nintendo was coming from:

1. Revolution is a somewhat edgey name. Let's face it, it's almost intimidating. They needed something simpler, and more welcoming to invite people who are already intimidated by gaming.

2. It's girly. Nintendo's hit gold lately in the female market. In case no one noticed, Xbox 360 also softened its image to appeal to both genders. Their logo was rounder, simpler, lighter in colour, the font on the box isn't so "edgey", and so on. Nintendo's doing the same thing as the 360.

3. It's got the "i." Nintendo loves Apple. Seriously. Recently, the "i"pod was voted one of the most recognizable brands in the world. I'm sure their love of the "i"pod and the many "i"products that have followed influenced the double "i" in Wii, if only slightly.

4. It's international. Coming up with a brand that can actually be pronounced in the hundreds of languages that Nintendo markets to is almost impossible. Revolution doesn't translate well in other languages. Especially not in countries like Germany, Russia, or France, where "revolution" has some seriously negative connotations.

5. It's short. Revolution is a long name, especially for Japanese audiences. They probably wanted something that didn't need to be abreviated.

There's more reasons, but those are some good ones.

Even still, I hate the freaking name. :P

At least its a little bit better than gizmondo. I'am not too crazy about the name to say the least, as a thirty two year old gamer, asking for a Wii (Wee?) or telling people that I'am at home playing with my Wii might send the wrong message ya know? I'am going to buy one anyway regardless of the name, who am I kidding. It's the games that are the true measure of the system so I hope everyone else can see past the questionable name. They just made their comeback a little bit harder. To try and shed their kiddy image then turn arround and call the system the Wii? Another uphill battle, goodluck.

I thought the French Revolution was a good thing?

But on a serious front, I fully expect Reggie to resign after E3. I don't see how he can possibly argue for the moniker, especially in the English-speaking western market. I've got no words other than to say "debacle" to explain the choice of name.

Let me say this: it doesn't make the console any less impressive.

Yes, "Wii" is not the best name they could've come up with. Yes, there are many jokes associated with the name.

When the games really start showing up, let's see if Wii is still a joke.

With Wii Wii, hilarity will ensue. 360 is accepted now, so it sounds cool. We all know, that after going throuhg all the trouble to make a tiny, sexy box, that wasn't Nintendo's priority :D

Stymie, the French Revolution wasn't exactly a good thing. It's end result, after another hundred years of turmoil, was good but the way they went about the Revolution was about as barbaric as Europe has ever seen including the Holocaust. I could see it having a negative connotation due to that.

With that in mind, they could do a NES/Famicom situation where the same machine has different names in different territories. If Revolution works in NA, then use it there. If Wii works in Japan, use it over there. But WHY do you FORCE a Japanese-friendly name in all territories? They couldn't use Revolution because it would sound incredibly dumb with a Japanese accent, did no one think "Hey, it sounds like wee, which sounds like urination. This might not work." That's my only problem with it. I've gotten to like the name (or dislike it less I should say) more and more the past few hours. If the games deliver, it's fine. Google sounded pretty dumb too at first, as did Apple's infatuation with "i".

What was wrong with Revolution?

I've already stated that the name "Revolution" was a bit too boastful for a company who, in the public eye, was no longer a major force in home console industry. And after reading Casey's article, it sounds like he agrees on a certain level.

Look at Sega’s history of naming consoles. Master. Genesis. Saturn. Dreamcast. Each is as pretentious and high-minded as the last. We may adore the sheer ego as gamers, but to the general public, it’s nothing special.

Just a thought that I'd like to share and see how it gages with everyone: Would your perspective of the Nintendo console change if it were named "Wi" (notice one "i") rather than "Wii"?

I've kinda tested this out to few of my gamer buddies and they seemed to come around more to "Wi" than "Wii." They said something about having the double "i" made the name, and the image of the console itself, a tad off-setting. Any thoughts to this?

No way, "Wii" is far better than "Wi"

"Wii" is half picture anf half word. What makes the name unique and clevor is just that. Giving it only one "I" leaves the name simply meaning "we", and that's all.

^ yes a very good read with well maid points! Wii is sound as We not Wee and look cool as a logo as Wii. I liked Revo better my self but this name is growing on me. If i walk into the store I'll just ask for Nintendo and thats selling them, that's there point. They may just become brand name again because of something that.
The video on Nintendo.,com was well done and i love how cute an cool looking the logo is in one sec. its both in a matter of Min's. Its flows well and i love how the free hand (the Controller of Revo/Wii now) turns into the I and the I play a Mach of games with four I's and become one W as in we the gamer We the multy player and two i's. in the end it took a whole day of think about it to like it and i think the Pee jokes should stop as meaning different art-calls are saying the "Internet" never does grow up. We also sounds just like Wi Fi and gaming is not fun with out some one else rather that be playing 1,2 or even 4 players or over WiFi/Online or playing a 1 player game and then telling a buddy about it. its then that We/Wii
becomes something more. The more i find my self saying the name the more i like it and don't give a damn what Eb games or any one else thinks if and when i say lets go play Nintendo Wii or where is your Nintendo Wii games.

Nintendo has maid it clear that E3 is about the games and this is a very wise movie because anyone who hates the name will get used to it by then or can it and play what E3 is all about this Year for the bog N the games!

I what to make one other point is some ways the guys up there is right but in other some people seem think that Nintendo is leveeing behind hard core gamers and thats just not show or i would not care about this system and the Shell would be herd of. They are making a bigger market that does not mean there getting rid of part of it or that all games will be like Nintendo's, animal crossing or Brain age which or killer fun by the way!Any one that cant get over there child like Pee jokes after 1 day is on my black mail kill them with a magnum list you've all been forward.

I've already stated that the name "Revolution" was a bit too boastful for a company who, in the public eye, was no longer a major force in home console industry. And after reading Casey's article, it sounds like he agrees on a certain level.

I disagree.

This is the company that basically reinvented (and re-energized) videogames in the 80s. Now they are trying to do it again. Not boastful - Nintendo had already secured its place in history regardless of past generation performance.

has anyone else realized that Wii could easily stand for "What is it?" which is the question a lot of us still have and no doubt what unknowing customers will have when they first see the name

To you and I yes, that's true. But to the general public and to those who Nintendo is targeting (mom's, casuals, etc..), I think the name "Revolution" overstepped it's "perceived" boundaries just a bit. In the handheld realm everybody is familiar with Nintendo, but with home consoles I think they have much to prove to themselves and to the GP, which is one reason why they're taking a step in a different in many aspects. I believe perception is reality in many cases, and the public perception is that Nintendo is the name of a game company who many kids grew up on and then later outgrew.

Frankly, it's wearing thin on me. It's a name. It dosen't really matter, and when you think about it, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System was about as unoriginal as you could get. At least the name is original. Stupid, yes, but still original. I know what they want in all of this. They give it a name so ridiculous that it gets lodged into peoples' heads, and they remember it.

Who cares. The system's final secrets are leaking out to the press, and all I care about is getting to see, once and for all, the new Super Mario title, and the other suprises there are to be had. Screw the name.

Haha. Those 'secrets' aren't leaking. They are intentionally putting them out now.

Man, damn fanboys lol. The name will be in-sync with the "all-so-ever-popular" console. Wii is just a name, like "God" is just a title of a higher superior power.

I still don't understand what the big fuss is about!? At least this Wii title has a being behind it. Nintendo wanted the consumers to be more experimental with their gaming experience like the new controller and all. I'm not a huge Ninty fan but, they are really stepping up their game.

Believe me, there will be some goodies shown at their pre-E3 show!! :D

Wii [AMN] will be there to cover it ;)

Well in Pennsylvania we have a 711 like store chain called Wawa; so I mean if people can get used that name Wii shouldn't have too much trouble.

Okay, I think I've had my run of Wii jokes. I'm finding myself quite fond of it now. A little ironic anecdote: from what I've read today, it seems that the name has had far more positive reaction outside the gaming community than inside it (despite gamers saying that it didn't have enough mainstream appeal).

Also, from the press release:
Freedom of Design: A dynamic development architecture equally accommodates both big-budget, high-profile game "masterpieces" as well as indie games conceived by individual developers equipped with only a big idea.

Not fond of it, and never will be. Of course there will be a point where I just don't care anymore. The name is still silly. Look at us, we have deep meanings behind the name of our system. Whooptie-doo.

Look at us, we have deep meanings behind the name of our system. Whooptie-doo.

If you noticed, a LOT of successful and good companies have creative/unique logos and names that have MEANING to it. Things seems amature if there isn't.

The Wii name and logo shines as more clevor to me every hour.

I dig it as a slogan. Capitalize each first letter on each word (What Is It?) and have the non-capitalized letters disengage from the words and disappear and all you have left is Wii ("WII") in the end. Captivating, enticing, and best of all, makes everyone curious which only leads to figuring out what it actually is. Good call on that, Hughesst.

I think some people that hate it so much are overeacting. That said, the name is kind of silly if you think about it.

It could be worse. Maybe.

So my ultra conservative friend (rrwr.blogspot.com) made a great analogy.

"Nintendo is like the democratics party. They take a winning situation and think 'how can we possibly screw this up.' They then procede to do everything wrong they can think of. Announcing the Nintendo Wii"

The system will be cool. But nobody will buy it.:'(

Thank you for saying that. I mean come on people get over it. It's just a name I mean i for one like but who thought that XBox,Gamecube, and Playstation were the best names when they first announced them. I mean come on it's about the games on the console not the freaking name.

Hey, I have a Porshe to sell you, its the newest 'crappy pile of ****' model, right out of the plant in Germany. Can I put you down for one?

Dont give me this 'name doesnt matter crap,' from a marketing perspective its incredibly imporant. Any name or slogan that you have to explain to someone is a bad one. Ipod, Google, they were odd, but no one needed to know what the hell they stood for, in order to understand what those product/services was.

nitpick: Porsche. I should know.

Like ipod and google. The XBox name was derided when it was first announced back in the day, yet you only call it a console name because people have gotten used to it. "Dreamcast", "Playstation", "Game Boy", "Gamecube" are all stupid names but have become commonplace because of time, just like "Wii" will. Nintendo probably just announced the name now just so they can focus on the games for E3.

Sorry, my bad, Porsche. I should know too, since my Dad owned a Ruf GT before he traded it in the Ferrari he owns now.

I have no doubt the name will be accepted over time, I doubt that the majority will every truly LIKE it. However, remember that Nintendo is going outside the box on this one. WE may not care about the name, but the average consumer that knows nothing about videogames should be able to immediate pronounce and understand the name they read on the box, IMO.

Maybe there's a deeper meaning to that statement, but I'll let you guys figure that one out.
