Man, I was really, really looking forward to this game. I think I might still give it a try sometime though. Alas, I guess we will continue to wait for an RTS. I won't be surprise if it's Nintendo themselves that will put out the first good DS RTS.

What's with IGN giving out low scores for the past few weeks? Seems kinda fishy...

For the lazy:

Closing Comments
When Real Time Conflict: Shogun Empires was announced I was excited. I am a huge fan of the many of Shogun Empire’s inspirations, and the idea of a touch screen RTS is simply intriguing. The DS is ideal for this genre, and yet players looking for entertainment in Shogun Empires will be dissatisfied with the worthless gameplay and lack of true depth needed for a strategy game of this magnitude. It is simply no fun to explore, painful to play, and lacking of everything that makes strategy titles entertaining and addictive. Luckily fans have another option, since DS will be treated to a pocket version of Age of Empires next year. My advice is to pick up advance wars, wait for Age of Empires, or go back and dig up Defender of the Crown for GBA. Real Time Conflict: Shogun Empires is a complete and unmitigated failure and should not be supported.

3.0 Presentation
In a genre where interaction means everything, intuitive design is essential. There is no reaction for commands given, and the game’s AI only adds further frustration.

3.5 Graphics
While some menus and character portraits look good, the main game features terrible animation and low-poly models that wouldn’t make the cut on N64, PS1, or even with the SNES FX chip.

3.0 Sound
The soundtrack was decent, but the continuous use of mashed together VO made us actually mute the game.

2.0 Gameplay
The core gameplay is a complete waste of time, and no fun can actually be found in the real-time battles of Real Time Conflict.

1.0 Lasting Appeal
There is no reason to play this game multiple times. Hell, there isn’t a reason to take it out of the box.

2.5
Terrible OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

7.3 Reader Average

Very rarely do you see such a huge difference between Reader's score and IGN's... I was hoping that it would be good. I'll have to rely on other people's impresstions.

Oh my God!!! I was expecting a killer-app!

Darkling, you brought up a great point. The last six DS scores that IGN gave out were: 4.5, 3.0, 2.5, 4.7, 5.5, and 4.0. What the hell?

I kinda saw this one coming. At best I thought it would be average. I really hope that this does not dishearten other developers from making these types of games. But I agree with the comment about IGN's increased harshness as of late. Somebody pooped in their cereal.

are you guys looking at the games that are getting these scores? eww. maybe they deserve these scores. ever think of that? its not like their giving good games bad scores

yeah, I mean games like Battles of PoP, Scooby-Doo, etc, yeah man, I think it's kinda clear why those have low scores. Like you guys said, i didn't expect this game to get a high score, but I really didnt expect a 2.5 either.

I expected a low score of Dragon Booster, and Scooby Doo, but I hoped for a better score for Shogun Empires...

At least developers WANT to make shoddy games. That's the power of DS baby, letting developers have fun whether they have talent or not.

yeah, we should realize that this is the first RTS on the DS, so, let's give developers a chance and some time to hopefully put out something awesome on the platform

It's not even really a RTS if you want to go by definitions. It's a mix of a simulation, action, and minigame setup. Warcraft...hell skimped out Warlocked on GBC it is not. If you know warlocked it was basically warcraft 1 slightly scaled back and worked magnificently on the GBC.

yeah, I had friend who had Warlocked.
