While its true that tastes across regions dont have to be the same to be valid, the general trend of the Japanese audience's taste in games has crossed over from delightfully eccentric to slightly crap. They tend to hate good games, and like quirky shallow crap in my experience. Some of those games are actually work liking for their charm, but alot of the games they ignore or boycott are worth their time.
The FPS genre definitely needs a shot in the arm, and its come to the point where I shake my head every time I see one of the gun-happy middle america hicks in my college town (the people inhabiting my college are, for the most part, anywhere from normal to wacky on the left-side of the spectrum) pick up the latest WW2 game. How many times do you have to replay the same damn war? That said, its also had some notable divergences from the standard - Oddworld: Strangers Wrath, Project Snowblind, Republic Commando, they all added a little something different to set them appart, and I enjoyed all of them immensely.
I used to care what games sold in Japan, but I really dont anymore. Their tastes are now so far gone from logic, and their importance in the videogame market is only shrinking.
And as for a genre that has expanded less and is even shallower...does 'Nintendo-developed party games starring plumbers' count as a valid genre?
Good to see that God of War is internationally loved.

Can someone explain the Fushigi na Dungeon Pokemon titles to me? Is this a new addition to the series, or something else? Red on GBA and Blue on DS? I'm confused.

the difference between japanese gamers and american gamers is
japenese people have taste in gaming.
sascha your wrong on just about everything you say, but your WW2 shooter comments are for once extremely right.
Awesome, Formula Front got a good score.

Wasn't there a gameboy advance Mario Party game? That makes 8.
yeah, and they have him in these kind of games too : Tennis, soccer, baseball, basketball, racing, dancing, golf, pinball, rpg (of some sort), and maybe others? Some might like that and others not. I would not be sad to see a whole new character trying out new kind of games, instead of old Mario. It's good that Mario will soon get a 2d platform gameplay-game.

Anyway, I'm also glad to see that God of War is liked worldwide.

yeah we need Mario games, and I have too say Mario sport games are usually always better than the original sport games MS > FIFA, MG > Every golf game, MT > most tennis games.
and the Mario RPG's Are damn fine games. (PM, PM2 and MRPG)

As much as generic aliens being beat up by the most original name in videogames: Master Chief count as a genre.
Yes, it counts. ;)
